You are not late, and you are not unusual
Three in ten adults in the United States say they have used a dating site or app; among people aged 50 to 64 the figure is one in five, and among those 65 and over it is 13% (Pew Research Center, survey of July 2022). Online dating after fifty is ordinary.
On this site the baseline is stronger still. The serious relationships page says it plainly: most men here are over forty, many over fifty, and a good number arrive after a divorce or a loss. About one woman in four on the site is over forty, and there are around sixty women over fifty, with their own pages — over 40 and over 50. You are writing into a room where your age is the norm.
What is actually different after fifty
Not the mechanics. A letter is a letter. What is different is what you can afford to say early and what you no longer need to pretend.
- You have a life to describe rather than a plan to sell. At thirty a profile is ambitions. At fifty-five it is a house, a job or a pension, children who are grown or nearly, a week that has a shape. That is easier to write about honestly, and — from what women on this site write in their own profiles — it is what they are asking about.
- Health is a topic, not a secret. The over-50 page tells men over fifty-five to write about their actual health honestly and to ask the same. It is not morbid. Somebody planning a shared life at sixty wants to know whether you walk, whether you travel, whether there is anything you manage daily.
- Money is a boundary, not a subject. You do not need to state your income, and the first month is the wrong time to ask about hers. What you do need is a rule you keep with everyone: no money moves between you before you have met. The site has no feature for it, which makes the rule easy.
- Time is worth more. A conversation that after a month has not answered a plain question, or in which a video call is always impossible, is not going anywhere, and you know that faster at fifty than at thirty. Spend your credits elsewhere.
Reading what women over forty on the site say they want
This is the one place where we will tell you what "women here" want, because we are repeating what they wrote. The over-40 page summarises the profiles of women in their forties and fifties: most are divorced or widowed, most have grown or nearly grown children, and what they write about a partner reflects that — reliability, honesty, a shared calm life, someone who has also lived a little. Many state an age preference plainly, often within ten or fifteen years of their own age. The over-50 page adds that women over fifty tend to write longer, more concrete profiles and to ask concrete questions back: where would we live, what do you do on Sundays, do you cook.
Two practical consequences. First, take a stated age preference at face value. A woman of forty-eight who writes that she is looking for a man up to sixty means it, and a letter from a man of sixty-eight is asking her to make an exception before she has met him. Second, answer the concrete questions before she asks them. A letter that says where you live, what you do on Sundays and whether you cook is answering her profile; a letter that says she is beautiful is not.
Letters instead of swipes
If your last experience of dating was before the internet, or a swipe app, the format here is worth understanding. There is no matching. You read a profile, you write a letter with no length limit and no timer, she reads it and decides whether to answer; reading her reply is free and writing the next one costs credits, bought once and never renewed (pricing). Live chat and video calls are charged per minute, inside the site, with no other app and no phone numbers. The how it works page lays it out.
For a man over fifty the format has one great advantage: nothing rewards speed. You can take an evening over a letter, re-read hers, and write to two or three women you have actually read rather than fifty you have glanced at.
The language gap, and why it is not a problem at your age
English here varies from woman to woman, and nobody can tell you in advance how much of it you will meet. Among women over fifty, the over-50 page says English is often limited, and that patience with that, and a willingness to talk on video slowly, is what they notice. Patience is something you have more of than you did at thirty. Write in short, plain sentences, ask one concrete question per paragraph, and let a video call show you how the two of you actually communicate. Our article on the language barrier goes into detail.
Children, yours and hers
At fifty-plus, most people in this conversation have children, and some have grandchildren. Say so early, with ages, and ask the same. Two things follow that are specific to dating at a distance. Her children may be adults who stayed in Ukraine while she moved, or teenagers who came with her; either shapes whether she can travel and whether she would ever live elsewhere, and the over-50 page notes that many women in that group say plainly they do not want to emigrate before they have met a man more than once. And your own adult children will have opinions about a woman you met online in another country. Tell them before the first trip, not after, and send them the dating safety guide so they can see you have read it.
The scam that is written for you
About half of Americans who have used online dating say they have encountered someone they thought was trying to scam them (Pew Research Center). Men over fifty with a settled life are the people romance-scam scripts are written for, and the over-40 page sends you to the safety guide for the scripts that, as it puts it, specifically target men over fifty: a sudden crisis, a ticket that needs paying, a move to another app. Never send money to someone you have not met; keep the conversation on the site until you have seen each other on video more than once; ask for that video call early, and treat a call that is always impossible as an answer. The site has no way to send money to a member, so any request for it is a request to go around the site.
Dating at 55, 60 and beyond
The advice above does not expire at fifty-five; what shifts is emphasis. At sixty and beyond, health and mobility become the first practical question a woman planning a shared life will ask, and answering it before she asks — whether you drive, walk, travel, manage anything daily — is what the over-50 page recommends. Distance matters more: a first meeting in an EU city is a long journey at sixty-five, so say how far and how often you can travel. Stated age preferences are worth reading twice: a woman of fifty-five who writes "up to sixty-five" has told you something. None of this is a reason to hold back. Among Americans aged 65 and over, 13% have used a dating site or app (Pew Research Center); on this site you are not the oldest man writing.
Which kind of site suits a man over 50?
Three formats exist, and the difference is structural rather than a matter of quality. Swipe apps are built around a large local pool, a photograph seen for a second and short messages; they reward speed. Subscription sites charge a monthly fee whether you write or not, which suits someone who writes a lot to many people. A letters-and-video site charges per letter and per minute of chat or call, with reading free and nothing renewing — which suits someone who writes to two or three people carefully and wants to see a face before deciding anything. This site is the third kind (pricing): what you pay for is what you did, and the one-month membership package it also sells lowers those per-action prices for a month rather than replacing them, with nothing renewing after it; its serious relationships page describes who is on it — most men over forty, many over fifty, most women saying in their own profiles that they want a partner and a calm life with one person. Whichever kind you choose, judge the site before you pay: how to choose a Ukrainian dating site gives eleven checks that apply to any site in this category, including this one.
Video, and then the meeting, months from now
Video calls are built into the site and charged per minute; either side can end one at any moment. Suggest the first after a few letters, keep it to ten or fifteen minutes, and agree the time in her time zone — the video dating page has the checklist. By the third call you will know more than the letters could tell you. Only then is it time to talk about meeting, and when you do, it will be months from your first letter, in an EU city you can both reach, with your own hotel and your own ticket. How a first meeting abroad works is its own article.
What does not change: answer what she asked, ask something she can answer, be where you said you would be, and say the true thing about your life rather than the impressive one. Fifty-plus does not make any of that harder; it makes it easier to see when it is missing.
