Moving from letters to a video call: when and how to suggest it

Suggest a video call after four or five letters each way, usually two to four weeks in, once she has asked you a question you enjoyed answering. Word it as an easy, short, optional thing with a subject and a time in her time zone. If she says not yet, ask again in a week. If she can never manage it, after weeks, that is your answer.

Letters are where a conversation starts on this site and video is where it becomes real. The gap between the two is where most men either hurry or stall: they ask for a call in the second letter, which is too soon, or they write for three months without asking, which is too long. This article is about the middle.

When is the right time to suggest a video call?

There is no fixed number, but a useful test is this: you have exchanged four or five letters in each direction, she has asked you something and followed up on your answer, and you have both moved past the profile facts into ordinary life. For most people that is two to four weeks of writing. Earlier than that she is being asked to show her face to a stranger; later than that the letters start to carry more weight than they should.

A second test is simpler. If you find yourself re-reading her last letter to work out what she meant by a sentence, it is time. Tone is what letters lose across a language gap and what a call gives back in the first minute.

Do not wait for a perfect moment, and do not wait until you have "enough" to talk about. Ten minutes is a good first call and ten minutes is easy to fill.

How to word the suggestion

Make it short, optional and specific. Give a subject so it is not an interview, a length so it is not a commitment, and a time in her day so it is not an abstraction.

Example: "I would like to see you rather than only read you. Would you be up for a short video call here on the site, ten or fifteen minutes, one evening this week your time? I would like to hear how you actually say 'Zaporizhzhia', because I have been saying it wrong in my head for a fortnight. If it is too soon, say so and we will carry on writing."

What that does: it says why (to see her, not to check her), it names the site (no phone numbers, no other app), it sets a length, it offers a light subject, and it gives her a way to say no without ending anything.

What not to write: "Can we video chat?" on its own, "I need to verify you are real", or anything that frames the call as a condition for continuing.

How to agree a time when you are seven hours apart

Kyiv is seven hours ahead of New York, two ahead of London, and, for a man in Sydney, seven to nine hours behind depending on the season. Her evening is a New Yorker's lunchtime and a Londoner's late afternoon; her lunchtime is Californian breakfast. Work in her time zone, say so, and give two options rather than one: "Wednesday or Thursday, eight in the evening your time, which is one in the afternoon here." A woman's profile shows when she is available for a call, which takes some of the guesswork out.

Allow for her week. Many women on the site work full days and some have children; a Sunday afternoon her time is often easier than a weekday evening. Allow, too, for the fact that power cuts and unstable internet are part of life in Ukraine. If the call drops, it dropped; write and rebook.

What if her English is limited?

Agree before the call, not during it: say plainly how you will manage if her English is limited. Keep sentences short, speak slowly, and do not fear silence; it is her thinking, not the connection. The video dating page has the practical points on language, light and sound, and the first video date article goes into what to talk about.

What if she says not yet?

Take it at face value. Shyness about being seen is common and has nothing to do with sincerity; so is a bad week, a sick child or a broken laptop camera. Say "of course, no rush", carry on writing as before, and ask again in a week or two. Do not ask in every letter; that turns a suggestion into pressure, and pressure is what makes a real person say no.

Two "not yets" with a reason and a warm letter around them are normal. What matters is the direction: a real person who has enjoyed your letters is moving towards a call, even slowly.

What if she can never manage a video call?

This is the one place where the advice stops being gentle. A video call inside the site costs her nothing but a few minutes, needs no phone number and no other app, and is the one check that cannot be faked with a photograph. If, after weeks of warm letters, every proposed call meets a new reason (a broken camera, then bad internet, then shyness, then a trip), you have been given your answer, however it was phrased. Consumer protection agencies describe the same pattern: the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's guide to romance scams notes that scammers say they cannot meet you in person and offers one rule above all others, never send money or gifts to someone you have not met (FTC). In a 2023 Pew Research Center survey, about half of Americans who had used a dating site or app said they had encountered someone they thought was trying to scam them (Pew Research Center, 2023). A person who will not be seen is not necessarily a scammer, but she is not someone you can build anything with, and you should stop spending credits on the correspondence.

Refusal to be seen combined with any mention of money is not a grey area at all; it is the pattern the safety guide is written about. Report the profile and move on.

What a first call costs and how it works

Calls run inside the site and are charged per minute with the meter on screen; either side can end the call at any moment, and there is nothing to install. A ten-minute call is a modest number of credits (the current rate is on the pricing page) and, compared with the cost of ten more letters that could not answer the question the call answers, it is the cheapest thing you will do this month. There is no subscription; when the credits run out you buy more or simply stop.

What to do next

If you are four or five letters in with someone and enjoying it, write the suggestion tonight, using the example above as a starting point and her time zone as the frame. Then read the first video date article so the call itself goes well. And keep the longer view in mind: on this site people meet in person months in, after several calls, not weeks in, and the safety cluster's article on video calls before meeting explains why that order matters.
